UAE Visa & Residency Guide

Everything you need to know about Golden Visas, investor visas, employment visas, and residency requirements for entrepreneurs and families.

1

Overview of UAE Visa System

The UAE offers several residency pathways for entrepreneurs, investors, and skilled professionals. The system has been significantly modernised in recent years, with the introduction of long-term visas, remote work permits, and simplified family sponsorship. All UAE residency visas provide access to a Emirates ID, the ability to open bank accounts, sponsor family members, and enjoy the UAE's tax-free income environment.

2

Golden Visa (5-10 Years)

The Golden Visa is the flagship long-term residency programme, available without the need for a national sponsor. It allows holders to live, work, and study in the UAE with 100% ownership of their business.

  • Investors: AED 2 million+ in real estate, or AED 2 million+ in public investments, deposits, or business capital.
  • Entrepreneurs: Ownership of a startup or SME in the UAE with annual revenue of AED 1 million+ or approval from an accredited incubator.
  • Specialised talents: Outstanding professionals in science, technology, health, education, business, or arts.
  • Scientists and researchers: PhD holders, researchers with significant publications or contributions.
  • Family sponsorship: Golden Visa holders can sponsor spouse, children, and one domestic helper.
  • Key benefit: The visa remains valid even if the holder is outside the UAE for extended periods.
3

Investor Visa (via Company Formation)

When you set up a company in a free zone or on the mainland, you can obtain a residency visa through that company. This is the most common pathway for entrepreneurs. The visa is typically valid for 2-3 years and is renewable as long as the company remains active. Visa allocations depend on your office space size and free zone regulations.

4

Green Visa (5 Years)

The Green Visa is a self-sponsored residency permit for skilled employees, freelancers, and investors. It does not require employer or sponsor support and allows holders to sponsor family members. Freelancers need to demonstrate an annual income of AED 360,000+ or hold a bachelor's degree with specialised experience.

5

Remote Work Visa

The UAE offers a one-year virtual working programme for remote workers employed by companies outside the UAE. This requires a monthly income of at least USD 3,500, current employment contract, and health insurance. It provides a way to experience Dubai before committing to a full company setup.

6

The Residency Process

The typical process involves: company formation or investment proof, entry permit application, medical fitness test, Emirates ID registration, and visa stamping. The entire process can be completed in 2-4 weeks. Key documents needed include passport copies, passport-size photos, educational certificates (attested), and proof of funds or business activity.

  • Step 1: Establish your legal entity or investment — this determines your visa category.
  • Step 2: Apply for an entry permit through your free zone or mainland sponsor.
  • Step 3: Complete a medical fitness test at an approved centre.
  • Step 4: Register for your Emirates ID (biometrics capture).
  • Step 5: Visa stamping in your passport — you are now a UAE resident.
  • Step 6: Sponsor family members through a separate but streamlined process.
